BELTANE FIRE – WHITE STAG
The release of WHITE STAG marks the final chapter in the story of a band that could – and perhaps should – have been.
Since emerging from the mists of 1983, people have continued to ask what became of the band whose music and live performances left such a lasting impression. WHITE STAG finally provides that answer.
The songs featured on this album are drawn from a collection of demo recordings made between 1986 and 1989, originally intended to form the foundation of BELTANE FIRE's second album. Following the release of Different Breed and the band's departure from Sony Records, writing and recording continued in anticipation of securing a new recording contract.
Recorded after completing the Marillion tour in 1986, every track was produced by the band and has now been carefully transferred from the original analogue master tapes. While the audio quality naturally varies from song to song, these recordings capture a band developing rapidly, experimenting with richer arrangements and expanding their musical horizons following the addition of a keyboard player.
Listening to these recordings today is an emotional experience. They reveal a band growing in confidence, creativity and ambition, offering a glimpse of what might have been had circumstances – and fortune – taken a different path.
Many have said over the years that BELTANE FIRE should have become one of Britain's leading rock bands. Like countless artists of the era, the band faced the challenge of rebuilding without the support of a major label at a time when there was no internet, no social media, no streaming platforms and none of the promotional tools available to musicians today.
More than three decades later, WHITE STAG stands as both a celebration and a time capsule. These songs capture the passion, optimism, frustration, pride and spirit that defined BELTANE FIRE, while reflecting the band's enduring love of these islands, their people and their history.
This is not simply an album of archive recordings.
It is the final page in the BELTANE FIRE story.
